Logging In
Here is the Uniform Resource Locator (URL), which is another name for the address of our Troop's website where you login, if you are going to edit your World Wide Web page or pages. Login page. Be sure to bookmark this URL.
HTML
Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML) is the programming language used on this Content Management System (CMS) type of website. The CMS application is 'Open Source' or free software from Drupal. Drupal's URL is at: Drupal.org if you wish to learn more about it.
W3Schools is an excellent website, if you wish to learn more about HTML programming and forming your website. They have many short tutorials which demonstrate each of HTML's programming features.
Editing your web page
You only have rights to edit 'Your' page or pages. So after you login, navigate to your web page using your bookmark previously saved in your browser's bookmarks or use the menu on the left to navigate to your web page.
You will be able to edit your web page(s), if you have an "Edit" tab displayed at the top of your web page.
1. Click the Edit tab. Your web page is displayed in the editor.
Note:
All of the blue text on this website indicates a hyperlink. When you are in the Editor, the blue text hyperlinks will expand or shrink the titled hyperlink. As an example of this, in 'Edit' look at 'Menu settings' just below your page title. Click the blue 'Menu settings' and note it will shrink because it is already expanded. Click it again and it will expand.
You may click any of the hyperlinks, if you wish to expand or shrink the information contained in the hyperlink.
2. The 'Body:' area. Use the vertical slider on the right to slide down the page to the 'Body' editing box. Note that the Edit box has its own vertical slider for moving up or down within the edit box area.
3. Content in this CMS type of website is for the most part a "WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET" (WYSIWYG) format. You will need to use HTML if you want to format your webpage, but this is not required if you are working on your Communications Merit Badge.
An example is: you type in a series of spaces to move some text over to the center of your page. But after you Save the page and look at the results of your handy work, the text is left justified. The display page function will remove any occurrences of more than one consecutive space and replace it with a single space. The same it true if you use more than one blank line (just one single "Enter or Return key" allowed). You can put them in, but the page display application will remove them when it displays the page.
So just type the text you want, and place an extra black line where you want a paragraph separation, but only one.
This kind of programming is as simple as programming can be and is ideal for anyone who is not a programmer to be able to put a website together.
4. When you are finished editing, be sure to go to the bottom of the page and click the Save button. Your page will now be displayed.
Go to number 1 above, if you wish to continue editing.
5. If you need help give webmaster a call and he will talk you through the process.
